I’d forgotten this book until I saw it recently. It was another childhood favorite of mine, but I don’t have the vivid imagery from it that I do from Alice. I think the childhood attraction centered around the idea of a “secret” anything – I had about a billion “secret” forts and hiding spots on our ten acres. Garden didn’t intrigue me quite so much. We had a garden. A huge one. Needing constant weeding, and consistently producing a bounty of vegetables that I did not, and still do not like.
As a veggie-loathing adult, this book stays with me partly because it is nostalgic, and partly because it thematically explores the power of positive thinking and overcoming adversity. I don’t have my old copy anymore though. I’m going to have to do what I did with Alice and
go down to the used bookstore and find a copy.

Definitely one of my all-time favourites!
